Privacy Policy
Nib for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Last updated 6 October 2026.
Nib is a writing app that keeps your writing on your device. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind.
Without Nib Plus
Everything you write, and its version history, is stored only on your device. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else. A backup copy of your library is also kept in the app’s own files on your device, where it is included in your device backups if you use them: iCloud Backup on iPhone and iPad, or Time Machine on a Mac.
Your appearance and sort preferences stay on your device too, with or without Nib Plus. So do your goals: the daily word goal and its progress, the words you write each day for the writing calendar, and any sprint in progress. The style check reads your writing on your device and sends it nowhere.
Lock Nib uses Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode through your device. Nib is told only whether it was you. It never sees your face, fingerprint or passcode.
Quick capture keeps what you send to Nib from the share sheet or Shortcuts in a folder on your device that only Nib can read, until Nib next opens and files it as a note.
Exports and backups you make are files you choose where to put. Nib does not see them.
With Nib Plus sync
If you subscribe to Nib Plus and turn on sync, your writing and its history are sent to Nib’s sync server so your other devices can fetch them. Before anything leaves your device, it is encrypted with a key derived from your sync code. The code never leaves your devices. The server stores only the encrypted copies, and neither we nor anyone else can read them.
A document’s own goal, and the links you’ve made to share it (see below), travel with the document, encrypted in the same way, so each of your devices can see and manage them.
What the server can see:
- a random identifier for your library, derived from your code;
- how many encrypted records it holds, how large they are, and when they changed;
- your App Store subscription transaction, signed by Apple, which we check to confirm your subscription is active. It includes the product, its expiry date and a transaction number. It does not include your name, email address or Apple Account details.
Like any web service, the server briefly handles your device’s IP address to answer its requests. We do not store it or use it for anything else. The server runs on Cloudflare, which processes that traffic on our behalf.
Because only you hold the key, we cannot recover your writing if you lose your sync code. Your devices keep their own copies regardless.
Sharing a draft
With Nib Plus you can share a draft of one document by link, for 7, 30 or 90 days. Nib makes a copy of the document as it is at that moment and encrypts it on your device with a new key made just for that link. The key is part of the link, after the “#”, the part that browsers never send to a server. The server stores only the encrypted copy, and neither we nor anyone else without the link can read it.
Anyone you give the link to can read the draft in a web browser and leave you a note on it, with a name if they like. Notes are encrypted on the reader’s device with the same key before they are sent. Only you see them; other readers don’t.
What the server can see about a shared draft:
- a random identifier for the link;
- how large the encrypted copy is, when it was shared, and when it expires;
- how many notes it has, how large they are, and when they arrived;
- your App Store subscription transaction, as for sync, which we check to confirm your subscription is active. Shares made under the same subscription are filed together, so we can count them and limit how many you have at once.
As with sync, the server briefly handles the IP address of your device and of each reader’s browser to answer their requests, and does not store them. The reader’s page loads nothing from anywhere else and sets no cookies.
Ending a share. “Stop sharing” deletes the encrypted copy and its notes from the server at once. Otherwise they are deleted automatically when the link expires. Deleting the document for good in Nib stops sharing it too, when your device is online. If your subscription lapses, shared drafts stop opening after a short grace period, and are deleted when they expire.
Reports. Each shared draft has a “Report this page” link, which writes an email to us that includes the full link. If the reader sends it, we can open the draft to review it. We may turn off any shared draft that breaks the law or the App Store’s rules.
Deleting your data
In Settings → Sync, “Delete everything on the server” removes your library from the server immediately. Turning off sync, or cancelling Nib Plus, leaves your writing on your devices. If your subscription lapses, sync stops after a short grace period.
Payments
Nib Plus is sold through Apple’s App Store. Apple handles payment and billing; we never see your payment details. Apple’s own privacy policy covers that part.
Children
Nib collects no personal information from anyone, including children. Notes left on a shared draft can include a name the reader chooses to give; they are encrypted, and we cannot read them.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the date above changes with it, and anything that affects what leaves your device will be said in the app first. Questions can go through the support link on Nib’s App Store page. Reports about shared drafts go to support@nibprivacy.com.
